7 Black Guys In Horror Movies We Wish Could’ve Lived

Duane-Jones-BEN

I’m sure that were all familiar with the stereotype that black guys in horror movies are always the first to die. Well, that isn’t always the case but for the majority of the time black guys in horror movies usually never make it until the end credits.

A lot of the times these character weren’t that major to the story so you sort of expect them to die and sometimes you feel like the filmmakers just killed the black guy just because they have to carry on tradition. These next characters actually broke my heart when they were killed in their respective horror flicks. So without further ado, 7 Black Guys in Horror Movies We Wish Could’ve lived.

Yaphet Kotto as Parker in ALIEN

Yaphet-Kotto-Parker

In 1979 Ridley Scott change cinema with this horror sci-fi flick. Taking Sci-Fi more serious wasn’t the only trend Ridley pioneered he also pioneered killing the black guys in horror movies. While most remember Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley as being the hero I remember Kotto’s character Parker taking charge and running shit. He lasted pretty long too. Close but no cigar, in the final act the xenomorph had his way and Parker meet his demise. I’m sure at the time they thought it would be unfathomable that BOTH Parker and Ripley could escape at the end.

Idris Elba as Captain Janek in PROMETHEUS

Idris-Elba-Janek

Over 20 years later and Ridley Scott is back at it. Returning to the Alien universe he created and killing black guys in horror movies. This time around it’s Idris Elba playing the laid back Captain Janek. In the film’s defense maybe I’m just overly sensitive. I’m a huge fan of The Wire and I still wake up in cold sweats at the thought of Stringer Bell meeting his demise at the hands of Omar and Brother Mouzone. I just can’t seem to get over it. Overall I actually liked Prometheus, I’m not one the naysayers who came up with hundreds of reasons to dislike this movie. And also in defense of this movie Captain Janek actually dies a hero. He basically saves the entire planet earth (almost) single-handedly.

Fred Williamson as Frost in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN

Fred-Williamson-Frost

Okay, I must admit that the reason Williamson is on this list is simply because I think he’s a cool ass dude. Not only did he not appear in the movie for quite some time he died almost immediately afterwards. DAMN IT!!

Miguel A. Núñez Jr as Demon in FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING

Young Reggie with his soon to be DEAD older brother Demon.

This movie catches a lot of flack among self respecting Friday the 13th fans. It’s sort of the oddball of the franchise; SPOILER ALERT Jason Voorhees isn’t even in the movie (expect in flashbacks). It’s just an overall weird movie. One aspect of the movie that many fans like is Demon. The older brother to one of main characters Reggie (who actually does live until the end). He’s cool as shit, he has a hot girlfriend in the back of his van, he’s eating enchiladas and living the American dream UNTIL those same enchiladas disagree with him and he meets his demise at the hands of “Jason” on a porta potty shitter. NOT COOL BRO!!

Vincent Craig Dupree as Julius in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTEN

Another Friday the 13th flick makes this list. This time the REAL Jason is setting his sights on New York NEW YORK!! Julius was an amateur boxes and an overall tough kid. As far as hand to hand combat goes he might just be the one of the few to take it to Jason the way that he did. He went out like a G, boxing the shit out of Jason UNTIL he got his head knocked off (literally). Still one of my favorite F13th kills I’m sad to say.

Duane Jones as Ben in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

George A. Romero changed the game with eerie zombie flick. It was also one of the few times where the black guy was front and center. Ben slapped white girls around, shot zombies and didn’t take shit from anybody. He out survived everybody in the movie only to be shot in the head in the last few minutes. At least he didn’t have to suffer the indignity of being into a flesh eating zombie.

Ken Sagoes as Roland Kincaid in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 4: DREAM MASTER

Kincaid-Dream-Master

Overall in the Nightmare on Elm St Series their haven’t been many black guys. Kincaid was first introduced in Nightmare on Elm St 3: Dream Warriors. He had a dream power where he had super human strength, he kicked Freddy’s ass and actually did survive the entire movie. For this reason his death in part 4 made me all the angrier. I remember being a kid and watching these movies back to back on VHS. Dream Warriors had me so amped. I started the Dream Master and I couldn’t wait to see what kind of damage Kincaid was going to do this time around. I was in for a rude awakening. Not only did the black guy in the horror movie die. He was the very first to go.

This list if by no means exhausted. I could go on and on with examples of black guys in horror movies who died too soon. Also, I didn’t forget about the ladies and maybe we can save them for another list. Can you think of any other black guys in horror movies who should have been included on this list?

  1. Reggie’s brothers name is Demon, not Roach in Friday the 13th part 5
