Sexualised screen violence has been a slippery slope issue in cinema ever since its inception. Rape scenes in particular have always been a thorny issue. Cinema has showed us time and time again just how gruesome the act could be with films such as The Virgin Spring (1960), Deliverance (1972), The Last House on the Left (1972), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), The Baby of Mâcon (1993) Pulp Fiction (1994), Irréversible (2002), and countless others. Fast forward and this is the most disturbing rape scenes in recent film history.
5. Divergent (2014)
Divergent takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where a city has been divided into 5 factions based on their predispositions. Shailene Woodley plays Beatrice “Tris” Prior who learns she doesn’t fall into any of these predispositions and thus is a threat to the collective. Now, this wouldn’t be a blockbuster aimed at teenagers without a needless love story, so Tris begins to fall for a young man named Four (played by Theo James). A romance between the pair quickly begins to blossom, the two share a passionate kiss and are obviously infatuated with one another. Though later in the film Tris has a vision that she is being raped by Four; indeed. During an initiation test, Tris must come face-to-face with several of her fears and one of those fears is apparently being raped. If you’ve read the book, for which the film is based on, you’ll realize that this isn’t a rape scene at all. Tris is actually afraid of intimacy, not rape. Unfortunately not everybody reads nowadays and this moment comes completely out of left field if you weren’t privy to its paperback form.
4. Camp Dread (2014)
Camp Dread (formerly known as Dead.tv) follows a washed up horror movie director as he attempts to get his career back on track using a reality show as a template and source of fundraising. The film features one of the oddest sex/rape scenes in low-budget horror history, the scene in particular features two of the show’s contestants. We have the film’s slutty girl and the deranged tough guy and a bunch of sexual tension. What starts out as consensual sex turns dark quickly. After not being able to get erect, the guy basically pretends to rape her which sort of turns into a real rape…we think. He then ejaculates on her stomach and she wipes the jizz up and smears it on his face. He gets understandably upset but remembers that he’s on camera (this is a “reality show” after all). The whole scene is odd, it isn’t sexy, it’s not scary or funny it’s just…disturbing.
3. Evil Dead (2013)
The fourth chapter of the Evil Dead franchise, served as both a remake, a reboot and as a loose continuation of the series. Whether you love or hate the film, one thing can not be denied…the tree rape scene is still creepy and potent as can be. When Mia (played by Jane Levy), her brother and friends head out to a cabin in the middle of nowhere, things immediately become disturbing. Demonic spirits attempt to possess Mia ultimately catching up with her in a tree. We then see a tree branch travel up her skirt and having its way with her. While the scene does leave a little to the imagination, it is still one of the most disturbing moments of the entire Evil Dead franchise.
2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
In David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Rooney Mara plays Lisbeth Salander, a ward of the state due to apparent mental health problems. Her guardian has had a stroke and she is appointed a new guardian named Nils Bjurman (played by Yorick van Wageningen) who uses his position of power to extort sexual favors from Lisbeth. First he forces her to give him oral sex in his office and then invites her to his house only to anally rape her while she’s tied to the bed. Somewhat thankfully, Lisbeth had the sagacity to keep a video camera in her bag which recorded the entire incident. With this new power she quickly turns the tables on the situation. During their next meeting, she shocks him with a taser, physically brands him as a rapist, anally rapes him with a dildo and blackmails him to give her all of her money. Either rape scene is difficult to watch but one can’t help to feel a guilty sense of enjoyment when watching Bjurman get what he deserves.
1. I Spit on Your Grave 2 (2013)
1978’s Day of the Woman (better known by its re-release title, I Spit on Your Grave) is one of the most controversial cult classic rape and revenge films of all time. In a nutshell, the films follows a young lady who gets raped by several men in the woods, she recovers and systematically gets her revenge, killing every one of the victimizers. There was a reboot in 2010 that was equally as disturbing as its predecessor. Then most recently we got the sequel I Spin on your Grave 2, which takes the vileness up several notches. The film follows aspiring model Katie Carter (played by Jemma Dallender) who has a run-in with some shady photographers. First one of the scumbags breaks into her apartment and rapes her on the floor. Then, along with a few of the other scumbags, they knock her out and ship her out to Germany. When she wakes up, the fellas urinated on her, sodomize her, and shoots her over and over with an electroshock gun. She eventually gets free and ultimately gets her revenge but not before she goes through hell and back. If you’re going to watch this film, do yourself a favor…don’t watch the unrated version, for your own good.
