From Burger King, to McDonald’s, to Pizza Hut fast food chains have been using celebrities to help sell their burgers and fries since forever. However, today we are going to be looking at a few memorable commercials featuring celebrities before they became famous or hit it big. This is ten old-school fast food commercials featuring now-famous stars.
10. Seth Green in a Burger King Commercial
Before he was starring in your favorite teen comedy or directing episodes of Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken Seth Green was enjoying himself a good burger. In this late ’80s Burger King commercial we see Seth as a young lad enjoying the newly revealed “Bacon Double Cheeseburger”. In case you couldn’t tell, he’s the dweeb with the glasses.
9. Megan Mullally and John Goodman in a McDonald’s Commercial
In this early ’80s Mickey D’s commercial we see future funny girl Megan Mullally trying to sell us some 99 cent Egg McMuffins. Wait, 99 cents?! Man, those were the good ole days. Anyway, our old pal John Goodman is also featured in the commercial as a customer who couldn’t be more thrilled to be devouring one of these bad boys. And we can’t blame him; not for those prices.
8. Elisabeth Shue in a Burger King Commercial
Burger King would like to ask you a very important, a very crucial question. If you think flame broiling is the best way to make a tender juicy tasty steak what do you think is the best way to make a tender juicy tasty hamburger? Well, at least that’s what ’80s megastar Elisabeth Shue was asking us. Before she hit it big with films like The Karate Kid (1984), Adventures in Babysitting (1987), Cocktail (1988), Back to the Future Part II (1989) and more, this is what the young actress was up to.
7. Michael J. Fox in a McDonald’s Commercial
Speaking of Back to the Future, we have Marty McFly himself, Michael J. Fox, out on a date in this early ’80s McDonald’s commercial. In the brief spot Fox desperately wants his date’s affections, but he’s also interested in her mouthwatering french fries. Luckily, he manages to acquire them both like the smooth young man that he is.
6. Elijah Wood in a Pizza Hut Commercial
Most people know him as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, though to us he’ll forever be that little kid playing that old-school arcade game in Back to the Future Part II (we just had to throw another Back to the Future reference in here somehow). Well, around that time Wood was trying to sell us Pizza Hut’s Double Cheeseburger Pizza as an alternative to bbqing at the grill in the summertime. As you could tell, that never really caught on.
5. Sarah Michelle Gellar in a Burger King Commercial
In 1981, long before Sarah Michelle Gellar was kicking vampire ass in Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she starred in Burger King’s first television advertising campaign. In the commercials she (adorably) calls out McDonald’s for having small hamburgers. The commercials were the first ads to ever call out a competitor by name. McDonald’s was not pleased and actually sued Burger King — they also named Sarah as part of the lawsuit. Yeah, it got real!
4. Steve Carell in a Brown’s Chicken Commercial
An early 1990’s ad had the 40 year old virgin Steve Carell shilling for Brown’s Chicken & Pasta. If you’ve never heard of this chain of fast food restaurants that’s probably because they are based in the Chicago metropolitan area. Apparently the restaurant got around to making a chicken that was cholesterol free. Well, that’s good news.
3. Meg Ryan in a Burger King Commercial
In this 1982 Burger King ad we find the future queen of the romantic comedies, Meg Ryan, explaining an upcoming “Aren’t you hungry for a Whopper” game. You could win a burger, $5,000 or even a million dollars! Ryan seems to be particular overly excited about the whole thing but we can’t say we blame her. Watching this actually does make us hungry for a Whopper.
2. Jason Alexander in a McDonald’s Commercial
Hey! You say you’re getting tired of lettuce and tomato hamburgers in this town that don’t quite make it? You say just for once you’d like your hamburger hot and your lettuce and tomato cool and crisp… all at the same time? Well, you got it! How about you try McDonald’s new McDLT burger? Well, at least that’s what a pre-George Costanza (and post b-horror movie star) Jason Alexander tried to convince us with this comical singing and dancing spectacle. Well, at least he still had hair at this point.
1. Ben Affleck in a Burger King Commercial
Before he was Batman or arguing with Bill Maher and Sam Harris over Islam Ben Affleck was just another struggling actor starring in anything he could book. In this Burger King commercial we see Ben driving when all of a sudden he gets a call from a lady with a sultry voice asking for Burger King. He tells the lady that she has indeed called Burger King and she asks if they could deliver a chef salad to her house. Thinking he might get lucky with a girl he’s never met, he obliges.
Just two questions, how rich did you have to be to be a teenage driving around talking on a car phone back then at what point did Burger King ever deliver?
