It Doesn’t Get Any Worse: The 20 Most Wince-Inducing Movie Castrations

5. 21 Jump Street (2012)

21 Jump Street Rob Riggle

The Movie: In high school, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) was a down on his luck dork and Jenko (Channing Tatum) was the popular jock. After graduation, both of them joined the police force and ultimately end up going undercover as high school students – they are assigned to an undercover unit to infiltrate a drug ring that is supplying students synthetic drugs.

The Scene: After it’s learned that the head honcho behind the drug ring is Mr. Walters (Rob Riggle), the school’s physical education teacher, a chase ensues between Walters and the film’s protagonists. Mr. Walters shoots at Schmidt but Jenko takes the bullet in his arm, saving his partner’s life. In response, Schmidt shoots Mr. Walters, unintentionally severing his penis and saving the day in the process.

4. Lawless (2012)

Lawless Castration Scene

The Movie: Lawless, directed by John Hillcoat (from Matt Bondurant’s novel) is based on the true story of three Virginia brothers ( Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke) during Prohibition. They cheerfully go about making their staggeringly potent moonshine until a crooked Chicago deputy comes ‘a callin’ wanting to shut them down or get a piece of the action, or else.

The Scene: Finding themselves up against a literally cut-throat copper, the bootleggin’ boys aim to cut something a little lower on the anatomy. Tracking down the guys who earlier attempted to bring them harm, the brothers take a straight razor to the terror-etched henchmen’s undercarriages and deliver them to their nemesis. Revenge is a dish best served in a bloody tissue.

3. Headless (2015)

Headless Scene

The Movie: In this “lost slasher film from 1978,” a skull masked killer (Shane Beasley) is on a rampage, abducting and murdering women in some extremely graphic ways. This includes chopping off nipples, gouging out eyes and having sex with their severed heads. And it’s all shown in gruesome detail.

The Scene: The film’s demented killer kidnaps would-be rocker Pete (Dave Parker) and his girlfriend Jess (Kelsey Carlisle). The killer makes Jess stab Pete several times before he takes it upon himself to chop off his bits and pieces – letting them fall bloodily to the floor. At least he doesn’t have sex with his severed head.

2. Teeth (2007)

Teeth Movie Brother Scene

The Movie: Dawn O’Keefe (Jess Weixler) is a teenage spokesperson for a Christian abstinence group called The Promise. She dates in groups, watches G-rated films, and has never even kissed a boy. However, the power of teen hormones is great, so temptation beckons. After a few run-ins with a few overzealous young men, Dawn realizes that she has a toothed-vagina (a condition known as “vagina dentata”), which is exactly what it sounds like. If you stick something in there then there is a good chance that it’s going to be bitten (or bitten off).

The Scene: With a premise as insane as this you could expect that there would be multiple instances of guys having their worst nightmare come true. And the film does not disappoint – from a creepy rapist getting caught in the Venus flytrap when he tries to aggressively take advantage of our half-unconscious protagonist to her vagina teeth attacking a poor gynecologist who was just trying to do his job.

1. Hard Candy (2005)

Hard Candy Castration Scene

The Movie: After three weeks of chatting with the thirty-two year old photographer Jeff Kohlver (Patrick Wilson) over the Internet, 14-year-old Hayley Stark (Ellen Page) meets him at a local coffee shop. Hayley flirts with him in spite of the age difference and proposes to go to his house. Once there, she prepares them both screwdrivers and Jeff passes out. When he awakes, he is tied up to a chair, and Hayley accuses him of pedophilia. And things just get more nuts from there.

The Scene: The filmmakers puts us through an incredibly on edge and drawn-out castration procedure, maintaining some semblance of sympathy by ensuring that the audience is still unsure of how guilty this guy actually is. Regardless, the prospect of watching a 14-year-old girl castrate a grown man who only has a bag of ice for anesthetic is a daunting one indeed.

Honorable mentions: Ricco The Mean Machine (1973), The Holy Mountain (1973), The Street Fighter (1974), Foxy Brown (1974), The Witch Who Came From The Sea (1976), The World According To Garp (1982), The 4th Man (1983), Street Trash (1987), Santa Sangre (1989), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989), Once Were Warriors (1994), The Doom Generation (1995), Planet Terror (2007), Gutterballs (2008), Piranha 3D (2010), Hatchet II (2010), Chillerama (2011), Immortals (2011), Hobo With A Shotgun (2011) and Django Unchained (2012).
